Webcomic on New York Chinatown jail plan
Background
Community members in New York Chinatown have been fighting against a new jail in their neighborhood since its announcement in 2017, as part of the City’s plan to close the jail complex on Rikers Island. In recent months, as construction work is set to begin, community members have been actively raising awareness around the jail plan.

Amongst those opposing the plan, some believe the decision will displace an already marginalized community and some view the plan as a racist legacy of urban renewal in Chinatowns across the country. The webcomic follows four community members’ perspectives on the jail plan, their activism work, and their relationship with Chinatown.
